Keeping your STSC: yearly fee and five-year recertification

To keep the STSC you pay a $70 renewal fee every year and earn 3 recertification points every five-year cycle, and at least 0.5 of the points must be ethics (BCSP At-A-Glance V.2026.04.01 and Recertification Guide, as of October 2026). Three points equal 30 hours, and the toolbox talks you give or attend count.

One five-year cycle

  1. July 1, year 1

    Cycle opens

Points you earn from this date count.

  2. Every year

    Renewal fee due

$70 (as of October 2026). An unpaid fee invalidates the credential.

  3. June 30, year 5

    Cycle closes

All 3 points must be earned by now, at least 0.5 of them in ethics.

  4. By July 31

    Worksheet due

BCSP randomly audits 5% of submitted worksheets, so keep the proof for every entry.

  5. If it lapses

    Reinstatement

Possible only in the same year, with a reinstatement fee BCSP does not publish.

Where the 30 hours come from

BCSP's Recertification Guide counts attending or teaching 30 hours of safety, health and environmental (SH&E) courses, presentations or toolbox talks. A supervisor who runs a weekly toolbox talk is already earning toward the cycle. Log the date, topic and length each time.

The other route is a second credential. Earning the STS, CIT, CHST, OHST, ASP, SMP or CSP meets the points requirement (BCSP Complete Guide, June 2026), but the 0.5 ethics points still apply: BCSP says “ALL credential holders must earn 0.5 points from courses on ethics.” The BCSP certifications table covers the STS, CHST, OHST, ASP and CSP.

The ethics half point is the piece that gets left for June of year 5. The BCSP Code of Ethics sheet walks through the eight standards those courses build on.

Fees, toolbox talks and audits

What does it cost to keep the STSC each year?

The annual renewal fee is $70, prorated in the year you pass (BCSP At-A-Glance V.2026.04.01, as of October 2026). For application, exam and retake fees, see STSC exam cost.

Do toolbox talks count toward recertification?

Yes. BCSP's Recertification Guide lists attending or teaching SH&E courses, presentations or toolbox talks; 30 hours equal the 3 points a cycle requires.

What happens if my worksheet is picked for an audit?

BCSP randomly selects 5% of submitted worksheets and asks for documentation, which is why each entry needs a certificate, roster or sign-in sheet behind it.
