Sheet 48Getting certified

What you need before you can apply for the STSC

Two things qualify you to apply for the STSC: 30 hours of formal safety and health training, and one of four experience or education routes. BCSP also requires you to disclose criminal convictions and actions against a license or credential. Every requirement below is taken from BCSP's STSC page and Complete Guide, as of October 2026.

The 30-hour training rule

BCSP's wording: applicants “must have completed 30 hours of formal safety and health training through a single course or multiple training courses.” Appropriate training “includes any safety and health courses, conferences, or internal company training, to name a few” (BCSP Complete Guide, June 2026).

Hours stack. A two-day company course, a regional safety conference and a few manufacturer trainings can add up to 30. Keep certificates or sign-in sheets with dates and hours so you can show where the 30 came from.

And the OSHA 30-hour card? BCSP's text does not name it. The course is 30 hours of safety and health training, so on our reading it fits “any safety and health courses,” but confirm with BCSP before you count on it. STSC vs OSHA 30 covers what the card is and what it isn't.

Experience: meet any one of these four

  • Two years of supervisory experience related to construction
  • Four years of work experience in construction, at 18 hours a week or more
  • An associate degree or higher in occupational safety, risk management or construction management
  • A completed two-year trade or union training program or apprenticeship

Reading BCSP's wording closely

Related to construction
The supervisory route asks for supervision tied to construction. Two years supervising a plant or warehouse crew fits the STS instead, which accepts supervision in any industry; see STS vs STSC.
Part-time minimum
Work experience counts only at 18 hours a week or more (BCSP STSC page, as of October 2026).
Alternative Pathway
BCSP's fee sheet labels the degree and apprenticeship routes an alternative for candidates who do not meet the experience requirement (At-A-Glance V.2026.04.01).

Once you meet both

Applications go through a BCSP profile; the application process lists every step from profile to a Pearson VUE seat. The application fee is $120 and the exam $185, or $293 bought together as BCSP's combo (BCSP At-A-Glance V.2026.04.01, as of October 2026). The bundle with a second attempt and the other fees are on STSC exam cost.

No job title appears in the requirements. BCSP writes the credential for “executives, directors, managers, supervisors, superintendents, and employees,” and safety need not be their main duty (BCSP Complete Guide, June 2026).
